In September 1493, Columbus embarks on his second voyage to find the sea route to India. Ahead awaits the new and unknown. Behind him are the Mediterranean and the Strait of Gibraltar, which marked the end of the known world. According to a legend, the Pillars of Hercules were placed at each end of the Strait with the inscription “Non Plus Ultra” (Nothing Further Beyond) – a phrase that has given name to our Non Plus Ultra blends. Columbus, as you know, did not find the sea route to India. Instead, he discovered the West Indies, where the Spaniards planted sugar cane and laid the groundwork for the production of sugar and West Indian rum.
150 years ago, A.H. Riise put Danish rum from the West Indies on the world map under the trademark “Old St. Croix”. The island of St. Croix – The Garden of the West Indies – was the center of cultivation of sugarcane and the production of sugar in the Danish West Indies from the early 1700s. The by-product molasses was used to make rum. To this day, the heart of our blends continues to be distilled on molasses.
When production was at its peak, more than 30.000 acres were planted with sugar cane, which was processed on St. Croix 200 sugar mills.
La Galante is complex, full-bodied, and soft with a spicy taste of orange, creamy vanilla and lemon with gentle notes from oak barrels. Get a taste of the new Non Plus Ultra “La Galante” at your local reseller.
